Taekwon-Do
Up to now, there are a lot of explanations about Taekwon-Do. Here is only an explanation based on literal meaning of ideographic Chinese characters for Taekwon-Do as follows.

Tae means different kinds of movements and actions by using the feet to kick or stamp.
Kwon means different kinds of movements and actions by using the hands to punch or block.
Do means an advancing way toward a direction turned by a head.

Next is a summary of the above explanations. Taekwon is a power that people put out great ability by using the techniques of offense and defense through bare feet and hands. These kinds of techniques include different movements to keep the best distance and make the most of the body's abilities including feet, hands and other parts of the body to kick, punch, dodge and block. Do is a way of life based on morality and the principle of the thing. Therefore, Taekwon-Do is a kind of martial arts where people can display their powers by practicing the techniques of offense and defense through bare feet and hands and people can enhance their moral sense to lead a correct way through such training.

The power of Taekwon-Do needs Do to lead it in the correct way. Do also need the power to protect. If people practice the techniques of Taekwon-Do without Do, it will be easy to be used by others. They may stray into the wrong way, and their power will become a lethal weapon. It is really dangerous. If the power of Taekwon-Do protects people to enhance Do, their power will be a useful weapon. It is really safe. Otherwise, if Do does not have help by the power of Taekwon-Do to enforce, people will have difficulties to live a moral life. Do will be an eternal ideal only, because the spirit is willing but the body is weak. So, the people who practice Taekwon-Do should learn the techniques and moralities of Taekwon-Do.

The purpose of learning Taekwon-Do is to form a noble character to attain a healthy mind and body. Through regular and scientific training, the techniques of Taekwon-Do can build a noble character in a healthy constitution. The noble character includes a strong spirit plus adaptability to the community. The healthy constitution includes a healthy body plus the ability in self defense.

The immature techniques show some people who only learn limited techniques in order to use such techniques for fighting, or they are satisfied with playing some performances by using some techniques to attract and please people. A true practitioner of Taekwon-Do not only has high techniques and also has a noble character, but he or she is never satisfied.

The worst thing is some people who use Do in the wrong way. They often lecture on others about the philosophy and tenets of Taekwon-Do. It seems that they are noble minded. Such people usually demand others to do something according to the philosophy and tenets of Taekwon-Do. But they do not demand of themselves according to these or they break the philosophy and tenets of Taekwon-Do. Their words and deeds are at a variance. Also they think in one way and act in another. In fact, these kinds of people do not know Taekwon-Do, or they have a smattering knowledge of Taekwon-Do, or they copied some moral theory without understanding. A little learning is a dangerous thing.
